Kumamoto Castle Earthquake Damages

As you can see in the photo above, there are some recent damages to the castle wall. But the interior rooms were damaged as well, which prompted the castle closure to tourists.

Kumamoto is famous for its castle which suffered destruction in 1877. After the castle being rebuilt in 1960, it has been damaged in the recent earthquakes in 2016 and 2019.

The main Kumamoto Tourist Attraction is of course the Kumamoto Castle. Since this is now closed to the public, one must explore different venues. Which, thankfully, they exist in this beautiful city.

Suizenji Jojuen Garden

Apart from Kumamoto Castle, the Suizenji Jojuen Garden is the other top attraction in the city. These beautiful Japanese gardens date to the Edo period, as early as 1632.

The Suizenji Jojuen Garden is open daily such as:

March ~ October / 7:30 ~ 18:00 November ~ February / 8:30 ~ 17:00

The entrance fee is 400 Yen for adults. During the special February 2021 festivities, people that wear Kimono can enter free. On February 27, 2021 a Koi Akari & Light Up light show event will take place.

As with many other places in Kyushu, the local onsen are some of the most popular attractions. Onsen are Japanese hot springs where tourists, and locals alike, take a hot bath and relax. There are other activities connected to the onsen.

Top Kumamoto Onsen

  1. Kurokawa Onsen - A quiet hot spring along the Tanohara River on the way from Minamioguni to the foot of [Mt. Kuju] and the Senomoto Plateau. Sulfur spring hot water has a special effect on cuts. There is a communal bath, Yakushiyu, in the center of the hot spring town, and there are many elegant inns surrounding it.
  1. Hirayama Onsen - A quiet spa located in the mountains 9km away from Yamaga city. The origin is said to be the Enryaku year and boasts an old history. This hot spring village is the place where you can spend a relaxing time. It is known as one of the best hot springs in Japan.

  2. Yamaga Onsen - A hot spring town is developing near the confluence of the Kikuchi and Iwano rivers. The discovery of hot springs is old, and the name can be seen in Wamyo Ruijusho edited during the Heian period. The amount of hot water is abundant, and it has been customary to wash the clothes in the surplus hot spring water for a long time.

Apart from domestic flights, there are some international flights from Kumamoto to Hong Kong and a few other destinations in China. More details on the Kumamoto Airport official website.
